question After years on the punt, these are the first things I check before a race

Been backing the nags for a fair while now and my approach has got way less fancy over time. Early on I used to drown in stats and talk myself into rubbish. These days I only really want a few things to line up before I chuck a bet on. If I can’t work out the shape of the race, I’m usually out straight away.

Big one for me is the map. Who gets the lead, who gets the soft run, who’s gonna be posted deep, whether the tempo looks genuine or if it’ll turn into a sit-and-sprint. So many punters skip that bit and just stare at the form guide. A decent runner can look ordinary if it lands in the wrong spot, especially on tracks where the rail’s hot or they’re swooping down the outside all arvo.

Second thing is track and distance, and I mean properly, not just glancing at a couple of previous results. Some horses are absolute frauds once they get away from their preferred setup. Heavy form, staying form, tight-turning tracks, big roomy tracks... heaps of them are one-trick ponies. I also pay more attention to class than I used to. A horse coming out of a stronger race can be much more interesting than one smashing weaker company and getting overbet next start.

Last thing is price. Sounds obvious, but that’s where most of the damage gets done. I’m happy to be wrong if I took a decent price, but taking unders on a runner with a few queries still does my head in. Late market moves can be handy, sure, but I’m not blindly following every dip either. Half the time the best play is just letting the race go and waiting for a better one. Keen to hear what you lot still rate most these days — sectionals, market, jockey switch, stable patterns, whatever you reckon actually holds up.

I actually go the other way a bit. Pace maps are handy but heaps of punters act like they’re gospel, then one misses the kick and the whole thing’s cactus. I’d rather know which yard has one set for today and whether the rider suits it. Reckon stable intent beats a nice-looking map more often than people admit.
