question New to the nags — what do you actually check before a race?

Been trying to get a bit more serious about the horses instead of just having a random flutter when a name jumps out at me. Keen to hear what you lot actually look at before backing one.

Do you mostly go off recent form, barrier, track condition, jockey, trainer, distance, speed maps... or is there one thing that matters more than the rest? I see plenty of people mention market moves too but not sure how much weight to give that. Feels like if I try to read everything at once I just end up second guessing myself.

If anyone's got a simple way they narrow a race down, chuck it in here. Even just the basic stuff you reckon every punter should know before having a bet would help. Mostly looking for a decent starting point so I'm not punting blind every Saturday arvo.

Simplest fix for that is do the map first and bin half the field straight away. If one looks like it gets the right run, then check distance and track, then maybe a quick replay. Price comes last for me. On a Saturday arvo that keeps it tidy and stops you talking yourself into every runner.
