question What do you actually look at before backing one at the track?

Been trying to get a bit more disciplined with the nags lately instead of just having a crack because the price looks juicy or a mate reckons it can run. Curious what everyone here puts the most weight on when they size up a race.

Do you start with the form guide, sectionals, barrier, jockey/trainer combo, track condition, distance, map... or are you more into watching how the market moves close to jump? I feel like heaps of punters have one or two things they trust more than the rest, especially on a wet track or in those messy bigger fields where anything can happen.

Also keen to know if anyone keeps it really simple and does better that way. I can go down a rabbit hole for ages and still end up talking myself into the wrong one by the arvo. If you've got a process that actually works for you, chuck it in here — even if it's just the basics you always check before placing a bet.

for me it's replays and it's not even close. The guide won't tell you a runner got shuffled back at the worst time or spent the trip stuck wide doing all the dirty work. I started keeping little notes on horses that looked flat on paper but had excuses, and that's been way more useful than staring at jockey stats all arvo. If a race looks messy, I usually back the one that can absorb a bad run, not the prettiest form line.
