question Backing the price, not the team — does it actually work long term?

Been reading a bit about punters who only jump on a bet when they reckon the odds are better than the real chance of it landing, even if that means copping a rough run for a while. Makes sense in theory... you're taking the better number when it pops up. Just wondering how many of you actually bet like that in real life.

If you do, how are you working it out? Your own ratings, comparing a few bookies, watching market moves, something else? I keep seeing people mention closing odds as a decent clue, but then some say you've gotta get in early before the market corrects. Feels like it can get pretty murky unless you've got solid numbers behind it.

I'm also curious whether this is realistic for normal punters or if it turns into a full-time spreadsheet job pretty quick. Keen to hear what sports you use it on, how you track whether it's actually doing the job, and whether the losing streaks are as bloody annoying as people say.

People get way too obsessed with closing price tbh. If that's the only thing telling you a punt was good, you're probably kidding yourself a bit. Mate, if you can't say why the opening number was off, you're mostly just following steam and hoping.
