Been messing around with a much simpler way of playing the last couple of weeks, mostly low-stakes cash and the odd little tourney, and honestly it felt way better than trying to get too clever. Less random hero calls, less punting from early position, way fewer hands played just because I was bored. Sounds obvious when you type it out, but yeah... tightening up a bit and actually respecting position cleaned up heaps.
The biggest change for me was pre-flop stuff. I used to splash around with suited rubbish and weak offsuit hands, especially if the table felt passive. Now I’m chucking most of that in the muck, opening a bit more clearly, and not limping nearly as much. Post-flop has been simpler too — more value betting when I’ve actually got it, fewer big bluffs into people who clearly hate folding. At the micros especially, that spewy stuff just burns money.
Another thing that helped was paying attention to who’s in the hand instead of treating every spot the same. If someone only wakes up with strong holdings, easy fold and move on. If a bloke calls down with any pair, no point trying to run massive stories at him. Pretty basic, but I reckon a lot of leaks come from ignoring the player pool and trying to play some fancy textbook version that doesn’t fit the game in front of you.
Not saying I’ve cracked anything, just that the more boring approach has been a fair bit steadier. Keen to hear what small adjustment made the biggest difference for everyone else. Was it position, hand selection, bet sizing, folding more on the river... what actually stopped the bleeding for you?
