Been comparing a few race tip pages and preview posts before the jump lately, mainly just to see which ones are worth a look and which ones are basically filler. The better ones usually give you a proper reason for the pick — map, track condition, distance, jockey change, whether the horse gets a soft run, that sort of thing. The weaker ones just throw up 1-2-3-4 with no context and call it a day.
For me, the most useful stuff is when they update close to race time and factor in late scratchings, weather and how the track is actually playing. If a tipster is still keen on the same horse after a downgrade or after the pattern shifts, I wanna know why. Short-priced favourites are easy enough for anyone to find, so I don’t get much out of those unless there’s a decent explanation behind it. Same with roughies — if someone’s chucking one up at odds, at least give us the angle.
I still use these tips more as a starting point than something to follow blind. Good for narrowing a race down, especially on a busy arvo with heaps of meetings, but I’m not backing off a list with no form comments. Keen to hear what others rate when they’re checking the morning mail — do you want full write-ups, speed maps, value plays, top 4s, or just a quick best bet and move on?
