Been punting the nags long enough to remember when half the field got backed off the paper and that was pretty much the whole play... these days I feel like if you ignore tempo, map and how the track is behaving by race 3, you're donating.
For me, I still start with the form, but I probably trust the speed map more than anything now. If a runner looks good on paper but is gonna get posted three deep or buried on the fence on a rail day, I usually let it go. Same with wet tracks - plenty of punters say they factor it in, but heaps still underestimate how much a genuine heavy specialist can improve when the rain turns up.
Keen to hear how others are narrowing races down. Are you blokes big on sectionals, stable intent, jockey switches, market late mail, or just keeping it simple and backing runners that get the right run? Also interested in what you toss out first, because for me wide barriers in big fields can be a bloody trap unless the horse has early toe.
