question First month learning poker, these were the bits that actually clicked

Been getting into poker properly lately and thought I’d chuck up a quick review of the advice that actually helped, because there’s heaps of stuff out there and some of it just turns into noise fast. The biggest change for me was playing way fewer hands. Sounds dead simple, but once I stopped getting involved with every half-decent looking hand, I stopped bleeding chips for no reason.

Position made a bigger difference than I expected too. When I first started, I didn’t really care where I was sitting in the order and just focused on my cards. Bad move. Acting later gives you so much more info, and once that clicked I started folding less by panic and betting with a bit more purpose. Same with bet sizing really — keeping it pretty consistent instead of randomly bombing the pot because a hand “felt strong” made everything less messy.

The other bit that helped was easing off the hero calls. I reckon a lot of newer players, me included, get a bit stubborn and hate being pushed around. Problem is, calling just to “see it” adds up quick. Folding isn’t weak, it’s just saving your stack for a better spot. I also found bluffing way less was good early on. Trying fancy stuff before you’ve got the basics sorted is a bloody easy way to torch chips.

If anyone else is just getting started, the stuff that seemed most useful for me was tighter hand selection, paying attention to position, and not getting too cute. Keen to hear what clicked for other people though — was there one concept that made the game make sense for you, or did it take a while before it all stopped feeling like chaos?

I’m a bit skeptical of the really common “just play tight and wait” advice because heaps of new players hear that and turn into total nits, then wonder why they’re getting ground down and bored. What helped me more was sticking to a simple preflop range and having a hard stop for the session, cos early on tilt did more damage than any fancy mistake.
