question Seeing heaps of first-timers at the tables lately — what should they learn first?

Been noticing a bit of a fresh wave of people getting into poker lately — mates asking about it again, more newbie chat in apps, random clips everywhere. Feels like every time there’s a big tournament on or a few hands go viral, a bunch of people get keen and jump straight into low stakes without really knowing where to start.

If someone’s brand new, what do you reckon matters first? Not the fancy stuff, just the basics that actually stop them punting chips for no reason. Position? Starting hands? Learning to fold way more than they want to? Bankroll stuff? I’m curious because half the advice online still sounds either too nitty or way too galaxy-brain for someone just having a crack.

Also wondering if the old standard tips still hold up the same now, especially for online micro games where people do some weird bloody things. If you had to give a new player 3 or 4 things to focus on for their first few sessions, what would you chuck in there?

For a first few sessions I'd say play one table only and actually watch the showdowns. You learn heaps seeing what people turn up with after all the nonsense, way more than clicking buttons fast and missing everything.

The one-table thing would've saved me early tbh. I kept opening extra tables because I got bored, then started paying off river bets just because I had 'something'. Do you lot tell new players to just overfold those spots for a while till they get the hang of hand strength?
