question Why do small pocket pairs feel so awkward early?

Been trying to tidy up my play lately and the hands that keep doing my head in are the little pairs early in the hand... 22 through 66 sort of stuff. Half the time I chuck in a call hoping to hit a set, miss the flop, then I feel like I've just donated chips for no reason. If I raise, someone usually comes along anyway and now I'm guessing on heaps of boards.

I'm mainly talking regular hold'em, not some weird home game rules. Do you lot just bin those hands from early position unless the table is soft as? Or are you happy opening them if stacks are deep enough? I reckon position is the big thing, but then I watch decent players apply pressure with hands I'd probably just fold and now I'm second guessing everything lol.

Keen to hear how other people handle it - cash games, tourneys, whatever. Are you set mining most of the time, mixing in raises, or just avoiding the headache unless you're on the button and feeling cheeky? Would be good to know what actually works for real players, not just textbook stuff.

In cash games I got way more profitable the minute I stopped treating those baby pairs like automatic calls from early seats. Sounds nitty, but I reckon the real leak is all the hopeful preflop flats, then you miss and start talking yourself into one more street on ugly boards. If I'm opening them up front now, it's usually because the table's tight and I can just nick the blinds a fair bit.
