question What do you rate higher these days: speed maps or late market moves?

Curious where everyone lands on this now. I used to do most of my work off form, map, track condition, barrier, weight swings etc and only really use the market late as a sanity check. Lately though, some of the best results I’ve had have come from respecting those last 10-15 mins a lot more, especially in the metro meetings where the smart money can really smash one.

For me, I still won’t back something just because it shortens. If the map looks ugly and it needs a miracle from the gate, I’m not gonna talk myself into it because it firms from 6s into 4.20. But if I’ve already marked it a chance and then it gets a proper push, that’s usually enough for me to have a decent crack. Same with drifters too, sometimes they mean nothing, other times they’re dead and buried before they jump.

I’m pretty keen to hear how other punters are sorting their races these days. Are you starting with sectional times, map, jockey/trainer patterns, track bias, or just keeping it simple and waiting for market clues? Also interested if anyone’s changed approach for provincials compared to Saturday arvo city stuff, because I reckon they’re almost different sports at times.

Chuck in what you actually look at first when you open a race and what you’re happy to ignore. Always good nicking a few sharp angles off other blokes on here, mate.

Replays first for me, by a mile. Raw sectionals can suck you in if you haven't actually seen how the run set up. If one is travelling sweet, gets buried away, then finds the line late, that's usually the runner I want next go if the map isn't a dog's breakfast.

Honestly that's where I get myself into trouble. Late moves are the fastest way for me to turn a decent read into a bad bet, so now I mostly treat them as info to note, not a reason to jump on.

When you're doing replay notes, what do you forgive quicker: getting held up or getting snagged back after a messy jump? I can spot the obvious luckless one, but the swoopers from last always do my head in.
