question Martingale still fools people or am i missing something

Every few months I see the same thing again... double after every loss, wait for the win, easy money. Mainly roulette but even sports people do the same idea with bigger and bigger bets. I get why it feels smart for like 20 mins because you do win a lot of sessions, that part is true. But then one ugly streak and suddenly the next bet is stupidly big and either you hit the table limit or your bankroll just taps out. so what exactly is the part people think beats the house there?

I had a mate swear by it after a bunch of small wins, then got smoked in one night and gave it all back plus more. That kinda ruined progressive systems for me tbh, even the “safer” versions. Unless the whole point is just smoothing variance and pretending the long run doesn’t exist lol. idk if anyone here actually uses a progression and sticks with it long term without eventually faceplanting because it really looks like that every time...
